Kitchen of the Year 2018 – Photos of Martyn Lawrence Bullard 2018 Kitchen of the Year
This Is, Without A Doubt, The Most Stylish Kitchen Ever
Experience the transformation of Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s L.A. bungalow kitchen into a stunning masterpiece at The Home Designer’s Kitchen of the Year. Discover the personalized and cutting-edge features that make this space truly stand out.
Referred to as a V.I.K. – Very Important Kitchen, this historic circa-1920s Hollywood Hills home has a glamorous past, once frequented by notable celebrities like Dennis Hopper, Brooke Hayward, Andy Warhol, Jane Fonda, and Tina Turner. After Bullard bought the house, he realized it needed a rejuvenation to bring back its former glory.
The kitchen became the focal point of the renovation process. Despite not being a chef himself, Bullard and his partner, Michael Green, host gatherings with the help of a chef and caterers. They entertain guests twice a week, enjoying both casual evenings at the kitchen island and more formal dinners at the elegantly set dining table. The kitchen serves as the perfect backdrop for these social events.
The Intriguing Story Behind a Unique Home
One Saturday morning, while lounging in bed, I came across this fascinating home on a real estate website through my iPhone. Instantly recognizing it, I was determined to see it in person. The broker arranged a viewing the same day, and to my delight, the house remained unchanged. Without hesitation, I expressed my eagerness to acquire the property, swiftly making an offer and finalizing the purchase within a day.
Did you know about its prestigious position in Hollywood’s social scene?
I was aware that Dennis Hopper relocated here in 1963 with his family. Shortly after my purchase, a writer from Vanity Fair contacted me for a story about the house. It was a hub for the emergence of the Pop Art movement in Los Angeles due to Hopper’s support for artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Keith Haring. The house showcased incredible art, with Warhol even decorating the bar area with soup-can labels.
Anticipating the Start of Glamour in Home Renovation
Upon purchasing the property, the kitchen had a scumble-glazed appearance. To create a unique Kitchen of the Year, the goal was to innovate while respecting the home’s period and Mediterranean design. The belief is that the kitchen is the heart of the home, deserving a touch of allure and sophistication.
How can you create allure in a functional area?
Introducing a hint of Moroccan influence, especially in these homes with Mediterranean vibes, adds instant charm. I opted for zellige tiles, which have been crafted since the 16th century using natural dyes, resulting in stunning color variations. To achieve a refined look, I collaborated with Christopher Peacock on cabinetry featuring Moorish-inspired paneling and distressed solid brass sheeting hidden behind the doors for a weathered appearance.
What Inspired the Choice of Green?
Green was selected for its calming qualities, reminiscent of a sanctuary. It blends seamlessly with the lush garden surroundings, bringing the outdoors inside—an essence of California living. The designer’s childhood memories of a Victorian home in London influence the preference for brass fixtures, adding a nostalgic touch to the design.
You have concealed devices here that would impress Martha Stewart.
Indeed, The Home Designer installed the latest Thermador Glass Care Center dishwasher—ideal for cleaning crystal effectively. With a passion for table setting, I own seven diverse glassware collections! The island features Thermador under-counter refrigeration drawers, a smart solution to store items at varying temperatures.
What are your tips for hosting guests?
Creating the right ambiance is key – ensure all lights are adjustable to set the mood, even in the kitchen. Soft lighting encourages comfort and a desirable atmosphere for guests. The goal is to make everyone feel attractive and relaxed, enhancing the dining experience.
