Designer William Cullum Says Victorian Design Is Making A Comeback

The Next Hot Design Style Is…Victorian

One Home Designer Next Wave designer presents the trend.

The upcoming trend in interior design is leaning towards Victorian aesthetics, as discussed at The Home Designer’s Next Wave gathering. During the event, young designer William Cullum of Jayne Design Studio expressed his belief in a potential Victorian Revival.

While it may seem surprising, the resurgence of Victorian style is gaining momentum, evident in Anthropologie’s Spring 2019 home collection. This collection showcases a vibrant mix of floral patterns on ornate furniture, a departure from the prevailing Nordic minimalism trend.

Victorian Revival

A revival of luxurious patterns, textures, and intricate details is making a comeback in the fashion industry, as seen in the opulent designs by Alessandro Michele for Gucci. Young trendsetters like Poppy Delevingne and Edgardo Osorio are also embracing de Gournay’s whimsical wall coverings, reminiscent of the Chinoiserie trend from the late 19th Century, during Queen Victoria’s reign.

The enthusiasm for traditional furniture was evident at the Young Collectors’ Night during the Winter Show in New York, dispelling the myth that millennials are disregarding classic brown furniture.

The Victoria & Albert Museum recognizes the diverse styles of Victorian furniture, ranging from neo-Gothic to Asian-inspired to Arts & Crafts. Textiles, particularly William Morris’s “modern fantasy” style, played a significant role in reviving British interest in elaborate floral designs with intricate detailing.

As mentioned by Cullum in a previous interview with The Home Designer, antiques can instantly add character and charm to a room. The Victorian style, known for its intricate patterns, textures, and luxurious materials, embodies these qualities. It’s time for a Revival.
