Emily McDonald, an expert in rental trends at The Home Designer, highlights the significant contrast in expenses, particularly in New York City, where single individuals face an additional cost of $7,562. This amount is equivalent to more than 1,300 lattes or 12 years of a premium dating app subscription, emphasizing the substantial impact of increased housing expenditure on individuals.

New York City and San Francisco are at the top of the list as the most expensive cities for single renters, but Boston stands out for experiencing significant tax increases for singles. The rental market in Boston remains one of the priciest in the nation, with the average rent price at $3,002 as of the December 2024, making it approximately 53 percent higher than the national rent price,” as explained by McDonald.

More Affordable Rental Cities

Good news! Denver, Colorado, and Long Beach, California, are more budget-friendly compared to other expensive cities. Detroit stands out as the most affordable city in the country for solo renters. Other cities like Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Buffalo, New York, Cincinnati, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, also offer affordable rental options for individuals.
